If you long for the “golden era” of Cuban music, songs that evoke narrow streets, ’57 Chevys, pollo asado, and moonlit parrandas, answer the door: Son Cubano Subterraneo is knocking. This local band – led by tres player Josh Schneck – draws its inspiration from the ritmos of Old Havana and delivers it to DC’s doorstep.
A six-piece ensemble of musicians and entertainers with a shared passion for Cuban “son” (the musical style at the core of Latin salsa dance music), Son Cubano Subterraneo comes correct with a deep repertoire of styles and tempos performed on authentic Cuban instruments. Now in their second year of residency at Bossa, they liven up the main stage once a month with a unique blend of classic son cubano, salsa, and contemporary sounds, with a bit of psychedelic cumbia thrown in for good measure.
Joining bandleader Josh Schneck are Steven Falcon (vox), a Cuban native who has performed around the world with some of the best of the best in the genre; Fran Vielma (congas); Eduardo Padua (bongos/hand percussion); Matvei Sigalov (guitar); and Gabriel Vivas (upright bass).
So if you enjoy the likes of Buena Vista Social Club, Beny More, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, and Oscar D’Leon, grab your dancing shoes and get on the Son Cubano Subterraneo train at Bossa! Next appearance: Friday, April 24, at 8:00 pm. ¡Azúcar!
